Welcome to Week 10! Are you ready for finals?  I hope you’ve had a great term!

The Psychology Department main office is here to assist you with your academic needs such as registering for courses, scheduling advising appointments, etc.  Our office hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday through Friday.   Please feel free to drop by anytime. 

Spring Term registration phase 2 starts this week  … You can check your registration status either in Student Online Services or here … http://catalog.oregonstate.edu/ChapterDetail.aspx?key=374#Section3696

Juniors and Seniors, if you would like to schedule an advising appointment with either Dr. Crowley or Dr. Dilts please drop by or call the Psychology Department main office at 541-737-2311 to schedule an appointment. Freshmen and Sophomores will see Peer Advisors to be sure they are on track and have a current graduation requirements (orange) sheet.  If you would like to request a peer advising appointment, please do so via the main office. 

You should be seeing course evaluations in your classes this week (or last week).  Please be sure to use a #2 pencil!

Happenings in Psychology:

·         Congratulations to Robinson Taylor, Research Assistant in Dr. Lien’s Lab - recipient of the OSU Libraries Undergraduate Library Research Award for 2009-2010!

 

·         Congratulations to Crystal Fisher, Administrative Student Assistant in Psychology for being chosen OSU’s Student Employee of the Year!!  There were many students nominated and we are very proud of Crystal.  Crystal’s nomination will now move on to the State competition, and may have an opportunity to represent OSU at the Regional and National level.  Congratulations Crystal!!!

 

·         Congratulations to Tabi Sager and Felicia R. Balschweid.  They were recently accepted  as interns for spring term at the Old Mill Center, an outpatient counseling center for kids and families.  This was a highly competitive process, and a difficult decision to make, because of our outstanding Psychology students and high number of applicants for only 2 positions. Congrats! 

 

·         The Psychology Society will be meeting on Mondays at 5 pm in Moreland 206.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  Come meet other Psychology Majors!

·         The Dept. of Psychology will be offering make-up examination proctoring Monday through Friday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Winter Term.  If you need a proctored exam, please make arrangements with your Professor/Instructor, then schedule the exam in the main office by calling 541-737-2311

Upcoming Campus Events:

·         Key congressional staff from the office of U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) will be on campus March 9 to provide OSU students with information about internships in both Washington DC and Oregon: 2:30-3:30 p.m., 303 Gilkey Hall. The forum will include Jeffrey Levensaler Washington, DC-based Deputy Chief of Staff and  Maribeth Healey, Deputy State Director.   The OSU Alumni Association will also be on hand to provide information about available scholarship opportunities. Sponsored by OSU’s Office of Government Relations.

·         Are you interested in removing the stigma that surrounds mental health? Want to make a difference on campus? Join Active Minds for a social night on March 10th at 6pm in the MU Basement!! Bring a friend!!

·          “Welcoming Diversity: Valuing the Differences Among Us” Workshop. A limited number of openings are available for the 2010-11 sessions March 12. Workshop details and pre-registration information is available on the OSU Campus Coalition Builders website at http://oregonstate.edu/studentaffairs/ccb/ccbcalendar.html. Participation in will serve as a pre-requisite for the “Skill Building to Effectively Interrupt Prejudicial Behaviors” scheduled for April.

·         Move it Monday with Beaver Strides. Join other students, faculty and staff for group walks around campus and the surrounding neighborhoods during the lunch hour. They meet at noon at Student Health Services (Plageman Building) near the east entrance and walk for approximately 45 minutes. Participate as part of the Power Up Challenge!

·         The Linn Benton Employers Partnership for Diversity invites you to its March workshop, “Navigating the Dynamics of Power and Privilege” March 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Corvallis – Benton County Public Library. This workshop will feature OSU’s Vice Provost for Student Affairs Larry Roper, speaking on exploring the dynamics such as power, privilege, marginality and mattering as we seek to make sense out of organizational relationships. ·         Three Fingered Jack performs March 11 during OSU Music a la Carte, noon in the Memorial Union Lounge. A student health nurse practitioner gone wild on cello and pennywhistle! A Research Office staffer strumming Irish bouzouki and guitar. In addition, a local bodhran (Irish drum) player/vocalist and a fiddler/vocalist. Get a head start on St. Patrick’s season with some of the finest Irish traditional music in the mid-valley!

·         The winter term performances of Oregon State University’s Opera Workshop will take place on Friday, March 5 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 7 at 2 p.m. in the University Theatre at Withycombe Hall on the OSU campus. Both performances will include scenes from Tchaikovsky’s “Yevgeny Onegin” (Eugene Onegin), Rossini’s “The Barber of Seville,” Offenbach’s “Orphee auz enfers” (Orpheus in the Underworld), and a classic American opera based on a true story of the West. Tickets are only being sold at the door, prior to each performance. They will be $10 for general admission adults; $5 for non-OSU students; and free for OSU students, staff, and faculty with OSU ID card.

·         National Anthem Auditions for OSU Sporting Events will take place on March 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Gill Coliseum. Register in the Lobby at 5 p.m., and auditions start in the arena at 5:30 p.m. Bring your calendar! A list of possible dates will be provided. ·         Please join the OSU Pride Center, Basic Rights Action Team, PRIDE Corvallis, and the OSU Office of LGBT Outreach & Services for a discussion of Oregon’s hate crime laws featuring Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson. This event will be held at the OSU Pride Center, 1553 SW ‘A’ Ave., Sunday, March 7, 6 p.m.

·         International Women’s Lunch Bunch, March 8 and 10 at noon, Women’s Center. International Women’s Lunch Bunch is in celebration of Women’s HerStory Month and International Women’s Day. Participants can bring their own lunches and eat at the Women’s Center while listening to International women share the status of women in their countries. A beverage from their respective country will be served at each event.

·         Here’s today’s OSU fact in honor of Women’s History Month: Ida Burnett (Callahan) is the only woman pictured in one of the earliest known photograph of Oregon State faculty, taken in 1883.  Ida Burnett was a standout student while in school and was hired immediately after her graduation in 1881 by President Arnold to assist W. W. Bristow in the preparatory department. She rose to become assistant professor of English at OAC and during the early 1920s was president of the Oregon Federation of Women’s Clubs.  Callahan Hall is named in her honor. JoAnne Trow will speak about the history of women at OSU on March 30, from 11:30 to 1 p.m., in La Raza Room, 208 Memorial Union.
